The opening round of the NBS Men’s League tipped off with a high-tempo clash between Checkers and FDWNZ, setting the tone for what should be a competitive season.

From the outset, it was a tight contest. Checkers edged the first quarter 26–20, before both sides lifted the pace heading into halftime, with Checkers holding a 48–41 lead. FDWNZ continued to apply pressure through their fast-paced offensive style, but Checkers began to take control in the third quarter, stretching the margin to 71–58. From there, they managed the game well to close out an 84–78 victory.

For Checkers, it was a strong start for a newly structured side featuring a mix of U18 and U19 rep talent. They were led by last year’s Defensive Player of the Year Riki, who delivered a standout 24-point performance. He was well supported by last year’s Rookie of the Year Jack Spicer, who added 15 points in an efficient outing. The team’s discipline on the defensive end was a key factor, conceding only 10 fouls across the entire game. From beyond the arc, Checkers knocked down nine three-pointers, with both Pip Johnston and Jack Spicer hitting three each.

FDWNZ, in their debut as a new side this season, impressed with their up-tempo style and offensive spacing. They were led by Puerto, who top scored with 19 points, including three three-pointers. Allenra contributed 14 points, while Newel Buenafe added 12, also heavily contributing from long range as FDWNZ kept themselves within reach throughout the contest.

A strong opening statement from both teams, with Checkers taking the early points in a game that showed plenty of promise for the season ahead.

The second matchup of the round saw a commanding performance from Nomads, who secured a dominant 113–67 win over an undermanned Eagles side.

Despite the final margin, the game started much closer than expected. The Eagles came out competitive in the opening quarter, with Nomads edging ahead 22–20. By halftime, Nomads had started to find their rhythm and extended the lead to 51–41, but the game was still within reach.

The third quarter was where Nomads completely took control. Their defensive pressure and transition game blew the game open as they surged to a 77–51 lead at three-quarter time, with Nick Fechney, Jet Aguila, and Riley Sa combining for all but four of the team’s points in the period. From there, they continued to pile on the pressure in the final quarter, outscoring the Eagles 36–16 to finish with a dominant 113–67 victory.

Nomads were led by a star trio who controlled the game offensively. Riley Sa delivered a huge 41-point performance, Nick Fechney added 26, and new recruit Jet Aguila impressed with 31 points, including six three-pointers. Together, the trio combined for 98 of Nomads’ 113 points and knocked down 13 triples between them, underlining their offensive firepower.

For the Eagles, it was a tough outing but there were still strong individual performances. Sam Rodgers led the way with 22 points, followed by Ryan Ramos with 15 and Owen Torcende with 14 as they battled throughout against a well-drilled Nomads unit.

A statement win for Nomads in Week 1, showing just how dangerous they can be when their key scorers get going.
